How to hire a DTC marketing expert: telling real experience from a borrowed title

"Expert" is the cheapest word in marketing.

Anyone who ran one profitable ad set can call themselves a DTC marketing expert. Some are very good. Many are one good quarter away from a case study.

Here is how to tell the difference before you hire.

A note on "Shopify Expert"

Shopify runs a partner directory for agencies and developers who build and customise stores. Expert labels in that world usually describe a technical service: store builds, themes, apps, migrations.

If you need a store built or migrated, hire one of those teams.

If your store already works and you need someone to grow the brand, you are hiring for something else: marketing judgment. That is what this page is about.

What real DTC experience looks like

They talk in unit economics. Contribution margin after ads, payback, repeat rate. Not just ROAS.

They have seen a plateau. Growth from zero is one skill. Growth through a wall is another. Ask about the wall.

They know what they do not do. A strategist who claims to also be the best buyer, designer and developer is usually none of those.

They can explain a failure. What did not work, why, and what they changed.

They have context across stages. Early traction, scale, team building. Each needs different moves.

Questions to ask in the interview

  1. "Tell me about a time growth stalled. What did you find and what did you change?"
  2. "What would you stop doing in our marketing in the first month?"
  3. "How do you decide between more spend and fixing retention?"
  4. "Which numbers would you look at first in our store?"
  5. "What do you not do?"

Listen for specifics. Vague answers about "data driven growth" tell you nothing.

Red flags

  • Guarantees of ROAS or revenue
  • Case studies with no context: stage, budget, timeframe
  • A tool or channel answer to every question
  • No opinion on your offer or your margins

Expert, consultant or fractional CMO?

The title matters less than the scope.

Still unsure? When to hire a fractional CMO is a plain filter. If the real question is a permanent hire, read fractional vs full time CMO.

My answers to my own questions

I was founding Head of Brand at Foodello and helped scale it from €1M to €15M ARR across European markets. Since then I have led DTC growth work for Shopify brands. I do strategy, commercial insight and leadership. I do not run ad accounts or build stores. I run a team of AI agents for research and reporting, so my time goes into decisions.

Ask me the five questions on a call. That is a fair test. If the diagnosis is still unclear, a Growth Audit comes first.

Questions founders ask

What is a DTC marketing expert?

Someone with proven experience growing direct to consumer brands, especially through the hard stages after early traction. The useful test is how they think about unit economics and plateaus, not the title.

Is a Shopify Expert the same as a DTC marketing expert?

Not usually. Shopify Expert labels typically describe agencies and developers who build stores, themes and apps. DTC marketing expertise is about growing the brand that runs on the store.

Should I hire a DTC marketing expert full time?

Only if you have the budget and complexity for a full time leader. Many brands between €1M and €10M get more from a fractional lead first.
