Ecommerce SEO strategy for Shopify brands: what most SEO agencies skip
Most Shopify SEO work starts with a technical audit and ends with a list of blog posts.
Both have their place. Neither is a strategy.
A strategy answers one question first: which searches can turn into profitable customers for this brand, and which pages should exist to win them?
Start with revenue, not rankings
Rank for the wrong terms and you get traffic that never buys.
Before any keyword list, write down:
- Your best margin products and collections
- The problems customers solve with them, in their own words
- What people search before they know your brand exists
Reviews and support tickets are gold here. So is your own site search data.
Where Shopify brands usually win
Collection pages. Often the best SEO asset a store has. Match them to real category searches. Give each a short, useful intro, not a wall of keywords.
Product pages. Unique descriptions, real answers to real objections, clean structured data. Manufacturer copy pasted across a hundred stores ranks for nothing.
Comparison and problem pages. "X vs Y." "Best X for Y." "How to choose." These catch buyers before they pick a brand.
Brand search. Protect it. If someone searches your name plus "review" or "discount," make sure your own pages answer.
Shopify technical basics that matter
Shopify handles a lot for you. A few things still need attention:
- Duplicate product paths. Products can be reached under collection URLs as well as under /products/. Shopify points the canonical at the /products/ version. Make sure your theme links internally to that version too.
- Filters and tags. Filtered and tagged collection URLs can multiply into thin variations. Decide which deserve to be indexed.
- Apps and speed. Every app adds scripts. Audit them. Remove what you do not use.
- Robots and sitemap. Shopify generates a sitemap automatically and lets you edit robots.txt through the theme. Use that with care.
- Fixed URL structure. Shopify uses set prefixes like /products/ and /collections/. Work with them rather than fighting them.
None of this is exciting. All of it compounds.
Where AI fits, and where it hurts
AI drafts fast. That is the problem.
Publishing hundreds of thin AI pages is a quick way to tell search engines your site is not worth trusting. Readers notice too.
Used well, AI helps with research, grouping searches by intent, outlines and first drafts. A person who knows the product edits every page. That is how I run content: agents draft, I edit, nothing ships unread.
How to judge a Shopify SEO agency
- Do they ask about margins and bestsellers before keywords?
- Do they report on revenue from organic search, not just rankings?
- Can they explain what they will not do?
- Do they treat collections and product pages as the core, not just the blog?
If an agency only sells monthly blog packages, you are buying volume.
Where SEO sits in the bigger picture
SEO is one channel. For most brands between €1M and €10M it is slow and compounding, and it works best alongside retention and a clean offer. It rarely fixes a stalled business on its own.
If you are not sure whether SEO is your best next lever, a Growth Audit ranks it against everything else. For where AI helps across the other levers, see AI growth consultant for ecommerce. I set strategy and direction, then work with your team, freelancers or an agency on execution.
The commercial lens comes from scaling brands, not from SEO tools. As founding Head of Brand at Foodello, I helped scale it from €1M to €15M ARR.
Questions founders ask
What is a good SEO strategy for a Shopify store?
Start with the products and collections that make money, map them to real searches, make collection and product pages genuinely useful, and fix the few technical issues Shopify leaves to you.
Do Shopify stores have SEO problems?
A few common ones: duplicate product paths through collections, thin filter and tag pages, and slow pages from too many apps. All are fixable.
Is AI content good for ecommerce SEO?
As a first draft, yes. Published without expert editing, it tends to produce thin pages that neither readers nor search engines trust.
Do you execute SEO yourself?
I set the strategy, priorities and briefs. Execution sits with your team, freelancers or an agency, often supported by drafts from my agent team.
