Fractional Head of Marketing vs fractional CMO: what founders mean
Founders say "fractional CMO" and "fractional Head of Marketing" interchangeably. Recruiters and UK job boards often prefer Head of Marketing. Agencies love whichever title sells.
Clarity beats branding.
Answer first
Fractional CMO usually signals senior commercial ownership: priorities, measurement, team and agency direction, brand and growth together.
Fractional Head of Marketing often means the same seat in mid-market DTC, especially in the UK and Europe. Sometimes it means a slightly more hands-on lead who still owns the plan but sits closer to execution.
If the scope document is identical, the title is packaging. If the scope differs, believe the scope.
Side-by-side
| Signal | Fractional CMO | Fractional HoM |
|---|---|---|
| Peer language | "Owns marketing as a function" | "Leads marketing day to day" |
| Common in | US-heavy fractional market | UK/EU mid-market titles |
| Risk | Title inflation without authority | Scope shrinks into channel management |
| Best when | You need P&L-level ownership part-time | You want senior lead language your team recognizes |

Scope template (steal this)
Regardless of title, write:
- Outcomes for 90 days (contribution, payback, repeat, creative velocity)
- Days per week / hours band
- Decision rights (budget band, agency changes, hiring input)
- Explicit non-goals (daily media buying, unlimited design)
- Scorecard and review cadence
If a candidate rejects non-goals, they want a vague retainer.
When the HoM title is the better label
- Your org chart already uses Head of Marketing language
- You are not pretending this person sits as a C-level peer to a full executive bench you do not have
- The seat is senior but expected to shape operators closely
When CMO is the better label
- You need authority to reset agencies and kill sacred projects
- Investors or board expect CMO language (still define scope)
- Brand and growth are both broken and need one owner
I was Founding Head of Brand at Foodello. The useful part was ownership and standards. The title on the card mattered less than whether the founder still had to approve every brief.
Decision rule
Pick the title your team will respect. Bind it to a commercial scorecard. Pay for judgment, not for LinkedIn keywords.
Then run a real hiring process: how to hire a fractional CMO works as a process guide for either label.
Questions founders ask
Is fractional Head of Marketing just UK wording for fractional CMO?
Often yes in founder conversations. UK job boards and operators use Head of Marketing more than CMO at mid-market. Still confirm scope: some HoM seats are execution leads, some are true marketing owners.
Which title should appear on the contract?
Use the title your team and market respect, then attach the same commercial scorecard either way. Do not let the label substitute for scope.
Which should I hire?
Hire the scope. If you need commercial ownership across brand, growth and retention part-time, either title can work if the scorecard is the same. If you need a channel manager, neither title is honest.
