AI consultant for lead generation in ecommerce: two kinds of leads, two playbooks

Short answer: in ecommerce, lead generation means two things. Capturing shoppers' email and SMS before they buy, and finding wholesale or B2B buyers. An AI consultant uses agents to improve the first and to build verified prospect lists for the second.

Both work. Both are easy to get wrong.

Lead type 1: shoppers (email and SMS)

Most visitors do not buy on the first visit. Capturing them is cheaper than paying to bring them back.

Where AI helps:

  • Offer testing. Agents draft capture offers and copy variants from customer language. Quiz, guide, sample, early access. Not always a discount.
  • Segmentation. AI reads order and browse data to sort new leads into useful groups.
  • Welcome flows. Drafted per segment, edited by a person, measured on first order rate.

What to avoid: a discount popup on every page that trains customers to never pay full price. See how to increase LTV.

Lead type 2: wholesale and B2B buyers

Retailers, distributors, offices, gyms, cafes. Whoever buys in volume.

Where AI helps:

  • Research. Agents find businesses that fit your criteria from public sources.
  • Qualification. They read each site and score fit before anyone writes a word.
  • Personal outreach drafts. One short, specific note per prospect. A person approves.

How I run it myself

I use the same system for my own business. A founder research bot builds a database of Shopify founders from their brands' own public pages. Several hundred verified contacts so far, each with the source page saved.

The rules are strict:

  • Only contacts published on the company's own site
  • No guessed or purchased emails
  • Hard filters for fit before anything goes in
  • A person reviews outreach, and volume stays low

Slower than buying a list. Far better replies, and no damage to your domain.

Where AI lead generation fails

  • Scraped or guessed emails that bounce and hurt deliverability
  • Hundreds of generic messages that read like a bot wrote them
  • Lead counts reported instead of first orders or wholesale accounts
  • Ignoring privacy rules like GDPR in the EU

When to hire help with this

  • Traffic is growing but your list is not
  • Welcome flows are one generic email
  • You want wholesale accounts and have no system to find them
  • You tried AI outreach and got silence or spam complaints

If the bigger issue is that paid traffic got expensive, start with rising CAC. Capture and retention usually beat more spend.

Proof

As founding Head of Brand at Foodello, I helped scale it from €1M to €15M ARR. Owned audiences, not rented ones, were what made growth compound.

Questions founders ask

How does AI help lead generation in ecommerce?

For shoppers, it drafts and tests capture offers, segments new subscribers and writes welcome flows. For wholesale and B2B, it researches and qualifies prospects and drafts personal outreach for a person to approve.

Should I buy an email list for my store?

No. Bought lists bounce, hurt deliverability and often break privacy rules. Build lists from people who opted in, or from contacts businesses publish themselves.

Is a discount popup the best way to capture leads?

It is the easiest, not always the best. Quizzes, guides, samples and early access often bring better customers and protect margin.

Can AI write my outreach for wholesale buyers?

It can draft a short, specific note per prospect after researching them. A person should approve every message and keep volume low.
